A descriptive essay is more like a creative writing assignment where you describe something in detail. These are probably the most common types of essays you will come across and are a common format of essay required in exams. It signals a writer who has intelligence, commitment, and enthusiasm. Use your own words in thesis statements; avoid quoting. Crafting an original, insightful, and memorable thesis makes a distinct impression on a reader. You will lose credibility as a writer if you become only a mouthpiece or a copyist; you will gain credibility by grabbing the reader with your own ideas and words. A topic sentence allows the reader to understand what you are writing about. The middle part of the paragraph contains supporting sentences that follow one another in a logical sequence of steps. The concluding sentence closes your subject with an emphasis on the final product or process desired by the topic. A well-crafted thesis statement reflects well-crafted ideas. However, this opportunity also gives you the advantage to choose a subject that is interesting or relevant to you. Once you have determined the purpose, you will need to do some research on topics that you find intriguing. If your goal is to educate, choose a subject that you have already studied. If your goal is to persuade, choose a subject that you are passionate about. The conclusion brings closure of the topic and sums up your overall ideas while providing a final perspective on your topic. Your conclusion should consist of three to five strong sentences. Simply review your main points and provide reinforcement of your thesis.7. You may have your topic assigned, or you may be given free reign to write on the subject of your choice. If you are given the topic, you should think about the type of paper that you want to produce. These are extraneous words that can be taken out without altering the sentence’s meaning. This is when you brainstorm ideas for your essay. When I do this, I write down every single word and thought that comes to mind for an hour straight, and before I know it, I am writing entire lines of text. Should it be a general overview of the subject or a specific analysis? If you have not been assigned a topic, you have a little more work to do. Whatever the mission of the essay, make sure that you are interested in your topic. This paragraph, like any other, organizes itself around three parts. This way, readers can infer implications from your thesis that you did not explicitly state. Read through your writing and make sure that every sentence has a specific and unique contribution to the essay. If two sentences convey two only slightly differing ideas, try to find a way to combine them. Do not expect to come up with a fully formulated thesis statement before you have finished writing the paper. The thesis will inevitably change as you revise and develop your ideasâ€"and that is ok! Use semi-colons, em dashes, or compound sentences if necessary. For example, do you have any sentences that start with, “It is” or “It seems that”?
